Map of the World’s Undersea Internet Cables
May 14, 2008

A few months back there were reports that the undersea cables that bring internet connectivity to Iraq and a few surrounding countries were getting “accidentally” cut. Three or more, only a few days apart.
Ever wonder what that network of cables looks like?

Who has the World’s Oil
May 12, 2008
How much oil do we think there is right now? Who has it and more importantly how much do that consume?
As most everyone knows now a days the countries that make up the Middle East hold over 60% of the worlds known oil supply. Which adds up to over 700 billion barrels of oil. With Russia & the United States bringing up a distant second and third with just under 100 billion barrels.

Energy Map of America
May 10, 2008
Where are the major oil fields in the US? How about the Nuclear power plants or coal fields? What parts have the most solar energy potential? MSNBC took data from various US departments and created a rough outline of where these energy sources are.
The maps are a bit overloaded with typical “local news” style background imagery so here they are with a higher contrast and simplified view.

Real Time World Emergency Disaster Map
May 9, 2008
What if you have a real time map of the worlds earthquakes, volcano eruptions, hurricanes/typhoons, wars, epidemics & toxic accidents? All being tracked over time and all tied to a nice zoomable Google maps interface.
That would seem both long overdue and probably impossible to pull off. Someone has done it.
An information agency in Hungary has tied it all together. Not exactly sure where they are getting their information from since I can not speak Hungarian but I would assume it is a feed from the United Nations. If anyone knows for sure please leave a comment of the sites history.
Regardless it is one of the most addictive sites I have seen in a long time and has the potential of being on the the most interesting map/websites around if they could only clean the interface up a small amount.

Apollo 11 Landing Site Map
May 8, 2008
Ever wonder exactly what happened during the historic moon landing? Who walked where, where is the equipment that was abandoned & most of all where is that blasted flag? Now you can see that and more with a top down point of view.
Not only does it tell you the location of items and events but it gives a spacial perspective by overlaying onto the map a regulation size football field. In other words they didn’t walk that far at all.

Map of US Home Mortgages That Have Been Renegotiated
May 7, 2008
There have been many maps, graphs, grids & breakdowns of the housing crash of recent years and the following mad dash to cover losses, limit foreclosures & convert to fixed rate mortgages. This is one that looks at it from the point of view of mortgages that have been renegotiated.
Calling the map the “Map of Misery” it reports that the CA, NV & AZ area is showing the largest grouping of “misery” with FL, WA and the Quad State area of DC, NY, NJ & MD as a close second.

US Map of Male vs Female Singles
May 5, 2008
National Geographic has released a US national map of the number of single single men and women. The disparity between the two is seemingly in line with the old saying” Go West! young man, go west”.
If you are a determinedly single woman and want to be part of a larger pool of consumers then Chicago, Philadelphia & NYC seem to be the place for you….. and the men who want to change your mind.
Visa versa if you are a single male and just want to work without the distraction then you seemingly live in San Francisco, LA, Las Vegas & Austin. As we all know those places have long lines of people hoping to attract the attention of those single men.

Map of the Languages of Europe
May 4, 2008
Ever wonder where do Slavic, Germanic & Romanic languages actually exits in Europe. As with all languages or accents they never follow established government borders.
Then again over time they can start to mimic them very closely. Thankfully someone has taken the time to do a detailed breakdown of the different regions of tongue and created a map with government borders overlaid.

US Map made up of Streets
May 3, 2008
Ben Fry continues to release new breakdowns of the US. This time as a composite map of the lower 48 states made up of only road maps.
No other information was used to create the map so the sense of topographical information is due to the bends and reactions of the roads to the underlying surface.
